A German-Italian conference at Villa Vigoni from 20 to 22 November will deal with ‘Interconfessional coexistence in social change: The Holy See and relations between Catholics and Protestants in the Federal Republic of Germany (1949-1958)’.
The Institute for the History of Christianity, Faculty of Humanities at the University of Hamburg and the Archive of the Catholic Military Bishop in Berlin are organising a two-day research colloquium in Berlin in mid-October 2025 on the topic of ‘Military chaplaincy in the view of (church) historical research. National and transnational perspectives’.

The archivist of the abbey, Father Mariano Dell'Omo, and Gaetano de Angelis-Curtis have published two fundamental studies on the abbey during the Second World War and the rescue of its cultural assets from the Allied bombardments. They will be presented on 12 November in Monte Cassino. Dell'Omo has published an in-depth article on the cultural significance of the Rule of Benedict in the latest issue of the Roman Quarterly.
After the first attempt to translate the complete Ratzinger edition compiled at the Ratzinger Institute in Regensburg into English failed miserably 10 years ago (only the liturgy volume was published), the American publishing house Word on Fire will now make a new attempt that will hopefully lead to success. There are currently complete editions in German, Polish, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese. The Campo Santo Teutonico library owns all available volumes.
The Institute of Byzantine Studies at the LMU Munich is organising an English-language workshop on the veneration of saints in late antiquity under Franz Alto Bauer and Daniela Coppola. The focus is on foreign relics and the transfer of relics.
Pius Engelbert of the Abbey of Gerleve died in Coesfeld on 6 October at the age of 87. He made a name for himself as a historian of the Middle Ages both in Germany and in Rome.

The priest Anton de Waal (1837-1917), rector of Campo Santo Teutonico since 1872, had been in Rome since 1868 and witnessed the fall of the Papal States during the Garibaldine war against the papal troops in 1870. They conquered Rome on 20 September of that year. De Waal wrote about his experiences in a novel that was published in 1901 and reprinted in 2011. It is now available as an audio book.
The Church History and Biblical Studies Department of the Catholic Faculty at the University of Salzburg is organising a remarkable conference on religious life behind the Iron Curtain. Roland Cerny-Werner (Salzburg) and Katharina Kunter (Helsinki) are responsible for the conference.
