The International Circle of Priests will hold its 53rd meeting in Cologne from 2 to 4 August. The theme: "The Church today. Between Reform and Eternal Life". Speakers include Markus Enders, Manuel Schlögl, Peter Bruns, Berthold Wald and Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz.
After two years of Corona-related abstinence, Florian Rösch and Britta Kägler (Passau) invite all Görres members in the Munich area and interested parties to a first Munich Görres meeting - initially without a lecture. The intention is to resume lectures on a regular basis. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 28 June, at 7 pm in the garden of the "Atzinger", in the immediate vicinity of the University. The Regensburg Joseph Ratzinger Institute, in cooperation with the german Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI Foundation, organised a matinée on 18 June to mark the 95th birthday of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in the Hubertus Hall of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich. Outstanding addresses and speeches were given by Achim Buckenmaier, Christian Schaller, Nuncio Eterovic, Georg Gänswein and Marianne Schlosser (keynote speech), while Gudrun Sailer led through the programme. On Thursday, 23 June, Dr Ignacio García will talk about "El Archivo del Camposanto Teutónico, una venta a una minoría en el Vaticano en la Historia Moderna y Contemporánea". The online lecture at 16.20-17.00 will take place as part of the symposium "Los archivos eclesiásticos en la construcción de la Memoria del Mundo" (UNESCO - Comité Mex. Memoria del Mundo/Centro de Conocimiento de Memoria del Mundo Vizcaínas/ Centro de Estudios de Historia de México, Fundación Carlos Slim). In Hildesheim, several university and church institutions have joined forces to offer a promising, even brilliant conference with a whole series of highlights to the interested public. The occasion is: 1000 years of the consecration of the monk Godehard as bishop of Hildesheim. Jörg Bölling (University), Monika Suchan (Cathedral Library) and Thomas Scharf-Wrede (Diocesan Archives) are in charge. The conference offers a compact introduction to the Middle Ages with lectures on art, history, manuscripts, liturgy, music, monastic culture, etc., as well as church services and visits to exhibitions.
Dr. Britta Kägler, Professor of Bavarian Regional History and European Regional History, will give her inaugural lecture at the University of Passau - delayed by Corona - on the topic of "Rethinking Education Bavaria's Education Offensive and the Founding of the University of Passau in the Educational Policy Context of the 1960s and 1970s". The lecture fits in with the 400th anniversary of the University.
On 4 June at 7.30 pm Stefan Heid will give a public lecture on "The beginnings of pilgrimages to Jerusalem" in the conference room of the Marienhaus of St Walburg Abbey in Eichstätt. Those interested are welcome.
Prof. Dr. Christoph Markschies (Berlin) has been the new President of the Union of Eight German Academies of Sciences and Humanities since May, and thus sits at a key point in German science policy with an annual volume of 70 million euros from the federal and state governments.
As is well known, the Nazis tried to instrumentalise ongoing encyclopaedia companies. The best-known example is the "Handwörterbuch des deutschen Aberglaubens" (Hand Dictionary of German Superstition) (1927-1942), which was ransacked in the 1930s and is nevertheless in every library because of its wealth of material. The Paderborn priest Theodor Klauser, who was at the Campo Santo Teutonico from 1925-1927 and 1931-1934, was commissioned as early as 1935 by his Bonn teacher Franz-Joseph Dölger to compile a dictionary of antiquity and Christianity.
