The conference, organised by Christopher Kast (Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities) and Claudia Märtl (LMU Munich / Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities), will take place at the Roman Institute of the Görres Society.
As a fundamental phenomenon of medieval life, travel opens up a multitude of questions, especially those of cultural, mental and political history.
The international conference is dedicated to the journeys of the popes and the Curia, which have been dealt with less frequently and more selectively than those of secular rulers. In contrast to the chronologically narrower focus of previous research, the travel activities of the papal court will be examined for the first time in a wide-ranging overview from the 11th to the 15th century. In addition, the (ecclesiastical) political, ecclesiological and symbolic levels, which have already been better studied, will be supplemented above all by an increased consideration of hitherto neglected aspects in order to pave the way for a multi-perspective approach.
For this reason, the focus will be on organisational-administrative and financial aspects, the travel and reception ceremonial as well as the reception of papal trips.
