Anyone looking at Trajan's Column today will probably be delighted by the unobstructed view of the memorial to the emperor. At the time of its erection (112/113 AD), things were different, as the column was
column was surrounded by the wings of a library and the Basilica Ulpia. This created an inner courtyard, which is no longer preserved as such today.

An impression of the original dimensions and effect of the complex can now be gained from the reconstruction of part of the four rows of columns in the interior of the basilica.

This ‘stylobatic’ measure is naturally very controversial. It should be seen in the context of the overall remodelling of the forum area by the municipality of Rome, for which a tender was issued a few months ago and won by Studio Labics. It is not known whether and to what extent archaeological research institutes were involved.
