Preview: In honour of Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Benedict XVI
Joseph Ratzinger had been a member of the Görres Society - a catholic association of accademics, founded in 1876 - since 1957 and a member of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society since his move from Munich to Rome in 1982, i.e. for 40 years until his death in 2022. The desire has therefore arisen to honour the German Pope with a tribute. 37 former active members of the Roman Institute took part.
The ‘Historical Insights’ are a tribute to the controversial scholar, as Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI is remembered by those who experienced him.
The contributions come from historians of the Roman Institute of the Görres Society, who were encouraged by Ratzinger to ‘seek the true and the good with a free and responsible spirit’. The search for truth is inconceivable without engaging with one's own, often problematic history, both in the details of historical research and in the broad outlines of the course of time.
It requires the perception of what has been and, as a result, the formation of judgements and the courage to engage in discussion. It is a rich bouquet of studies and essays on the early Christian period, the Middle Ages, papal history, science, Bavarian history, liturgy and art.
The volume will be published by Herder in October as the 72nd supplement to the Römische Quartalschrift.
