Dr Wolfgang Picken died of cancer in Bonn one day before his 57th birthday. All those who knew him are deeply saddened. In him, the Archdiocese of Cologne has lost one of its most outstanding pastors. Picken was successful in (almost) everything and he knew it: as a deacon in Siegburg, as chaplain in Bensberg and Moitzfeld, as parish priest in Bad Godesberg and as city dean in Bonn.

Picken knew how to appear in public, and he was not a talker, but competent and serious. He not only had his parishes in mind, but also civil society. His book WIR bears witness to this. Last year, he took up a teaching position at the CASSIS Institute at the University of Bonn, specialising in politics and religions, basic democratic values and the functionality of civil society.

I knew him not only from my studies in Bonn, but also because I worked in Siegburg myself. As Picken had spent his sabbatical semesters in Rome, he was always drawn there, so I sometimes led groups with him. R.I.P.
