Die Beziehungen während der Regierungszeit des Königs Maximilian II. (1848–1864)

Church Policy in the 19th Century
Richard Pfannmüller examines the reign of Maximilian II in the light of his church policy. He shows how Bavaria was largely able to assert its own interests with regard to state church law, the filling of bishoprics and Reisach’s creation as a cardinal. The bishops, appointed by mutual agreement following extensive preliminary discussions, were of a royal-Bavarian persuasion; bishops with ultramontane views were prevented from taking office. Pfannmüller also examines Bavarian foreign policy and the Catholic milieu, describing how a growing ultramontanism took shape in Bavaria.
