Papal foreign policy is of central importance for our knowledge of Europe in the late 16th century. The guidelines and management of the foreign policy of the Holy See or the Papal States can be determined from the main papal instructions for the papal diplomats acting throughout Europe. The present volume edits such instructions and the conflicting reports (relations) of the diplomats from 1585 to 1592, a period marked by a drastic modernisation of the papal government apparatus. The volume thus offers important insights into the administration of the popes and the structure of the curia authorities, and it devotes a great deal of space to the papal court and papal personnel policy.
