Contrary to many expectations, modernity did not see the decline but the resurgence of the political papacy. Successful social mobilisation of masses and elites for the papacy and its issues provide a key to this. The first part of the volume analyses structures and mechanisms of mobilisation since the 19th century. In the second part, substantial successes and failures of papal strategies on the topic of peace are discussed on the basis of individual examples.
