Irish pilgrims in Rome now also visit the Campo Santo Teutonico
Since the Holy Year 2025, a beautiful leaflet has been circulating for Irish pilgrims, showing them the way to places of Irish remembrance, such as the Basilica of St. Clement near the Colosseum, which has been cared for by Irish Dominicans for centuries.
The first stop on the pilgrimage route is St. Peter's Basilica because of the Irish Columban Chapel in the grottoes, followed immediately by Campo Santo Teutonico. The following explanatory text accompanies this:
‘Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, the so-called scarlet pimpernel of the Vatican, resided here during the Nazi occupation of Rome and from his base inside the Vatican walls ran his Escape line, saving thousands of Jews and Allied Prisoners of War. Today it is an oasis of peace with a commemorative plaque to O'Flaherty’.
The mentioned commemorative plaque:

A booklet available in three languages explains why O'Flaherty was able to help from the German colleague in the Vatican.
