The Roman Institute of the Görres Society will be awarding the Martin Chemnitz Scholarship, newly established on the basis of a private foundation, in the next few years. The doctoral scholarship is intended for historical-dogmatic studies on the reception of the Council of Trent in contemporary Lutheranism.

Spiritus Rector and scientific contact person is Father Augustinus Sander OSB of Maria Laach Abbey, staff member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, whom interested persons and sponsors can contact (This email address is being protected from spambots. With this project, the Roman Institute is resuming its Trent research, which was completed in 2001 with the publication of the last volume of the actes of the CONCILIUM TRIDENTINUM, and is continuing it consistently. In essence, it is about the way in which both the "event" of the Council of Trent and its published decisions were perceived and received in 16th century Lutheranism.

The diaries, letters and tracts of the Council, which were not known in Lutheranism at the time but are accessible through the modern edition of records, can shed new light on the controversies of the time: What were the disputes about, where were the boundaries drawn, where was there consensus? The most important object of study is the early Lutheran theologian Martin Chemnitz (1522-1586) with his important four-volume treatise on the Council ("Examen Concilii Tridentini").
