As is well known, it is not only the Görres Society that is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year (that of its namesake). The United States of America is also looking back on 1776, the year in which independence from the British mother country was declared.

As a guest researcher sponsored by the Fulbright Commission for the second time, it is currently possible to pursue academic research on the other side of the Atlantic, despite all the circumstances that are well known in the media. At Boston College, which is run by the Jesuit Order, there are numerous opportunities open to those working in the field of history and theology.

The study of Jerome's Adversus Iovinianum can benefit from this, as can the next stage of qualification at the University of Fribourg. Even interests in the history of science can be indulged here from a Swiss perspective: the first president of Boston College, Johannes, alias ‘John’, Bapst SJ (1815–1887) came from the Gruyère region in the canton of Fribourg! Fortunately, Catholics are no longer tarred and feathered in New England, as Father Bapst was.

Indeed, with an American pope at the helm, it is particularly appealing to experience Catholic life in the United States right now. For someone born in Koblenz, it will nevertheless be a matter of honour, Deo volente, to return to the Old World for the anniversary general assembly of the Görres Society at the end of September.
