A major conference on the history of housing foundations entitled ‘Foundations as role models: the Fuggerei in context’ is taking place at the Augsburg City Archives. The range of lectures covers topics from the Fugger foundations in Augsburg to similar phenomena of poor relief and social welfare in Europe.

Of the numerous lectures, only three will be highlighted here: Rainald Becker (Augsburg) will speak about the Fuggerei in European and American travelogues, Walter Bauernfeind (Nuremberg) about Nuremberg's Seelhäuser around 1500, and Frank Hatje (Hamburg) about housing foundations in the late Middle Ages and early modern period in Hamburg and Lübeck. Housing foundations in the Netherlands, Italy and England will also be presented.
